WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS 
presented by Alloway Creek Gardens

This year we offer a new “twist” to our workshop.  First, you get the group of 10 or more together, schedule the time and WORKSHOP and we will do the rest!

The following workshops are 2 hours in length, a hands-on class where you will make and take all kinds of wonderful herbal products, take home recipes, and have light herbal refreshment.

Starting an Herb Garden We will help you plan your very own herb garden according to your personal needs.  Bring a sketch of your proposed garden.  Location, soil preparation, herb usage, and garden design will be covered in this class.  Light herbal refreshment and instruction sheets included.  Fee $15.00 each

Culinary Dish Garden   Plant a terra cotta dish garden with a collection of culinary herbs for your kitchen window.  This planter makes a nice remembrance for an older person, a get well cheer up, or an indoor garden for anyone.  The fee is $10.00 plus pottery selection cost.

Fragrance Fantasy A “real potpourri” from the garden is a visual as well as a fragrant treat.  Learn what herbs and flowers combine well to make a delightful potpourri.  Learn about essential oils, fixatives and drying of delicate blossoms in silica gel or other desiccants.  Combine herbs to protect sweaters and other woolens and create a simmering spice to perfume the air.  Take home potpourri samples, a moth chaser and some herbs for the bath.  Handouts and refreshments are included.  Fee $20.00

Rosemary for Remembrance Discover the wonderful world of Rosemary.  We will introduce you to the many varieties of Rosemary and give tips for the care and feeding of these gals both indoors and out.  You will explore the many culinary, fragrant and medicinal uses of Rosemary and make and take home some special rosemary gifts and preparations in addition to your very own rosemary plant.  Herbal refreshment and handouts included in the $20.00 fee.

The Night Garden    Let us introduce you to the plants that give nocturnal fragrance and light reflection in the moonlight.  Learn about night pollinating insects, and take home a plant list and garden plans for your own enchanted “Moonlight Garden”. Herbal refreshments and handouts are included.   Please note that this workshop is done in late June and early July in the evening, 7:30-9:30pm.  Fee $20.00

Lovely Lavender Good things made with lavender will make your day at Alloway.  Learn how to cultivate and harvest lavender.  Make an Old English Potpourri; a lavender wand; and a lavender splash.  Lavender punch and cookies served.  Recipes and refreshment included in the fee of $20.00. Please note that this workshop is done in June with the lavender is flowering.

Herb Wreath for the Kitchen Herbs combine to make a lovely accent for the kitchen décor. Create a wreath on a 10” base using fresh herbs.  Finish the wreath with everlastings, pods and seed heads.  Herbal refreshments and handouts included in the fee of $27.00

HERBAL AND BOTANICAL LECTURES FOR GARDEN CLUB PRESENTATION

The following programs are offered to Garden Clubs and other organizations.  Please inquire as to fees are based on location and the depth and time of presentation.

“Herbs for Use and Delight  This program is an overview of herbs in history and the usage of herbs in our times.  Slides, handouts included. Approximately 45 minutes with answer period to follow. 

“Grandmother’s Garden” Walk down memory lane and enjoy a renewal of old-fashioned flowers, herbs and shrubs in the garden.  Scented geraniums and other garden “exotics” of Grandmother’s day will be covered as well as a display of garden gifts that the Victorian lady enjoyed.   Slide presentation showing contemporary use in the garden and a handout that emphasizes continuous color throughout the season.  45 minutes followed by a question/answer session.

“Lovely Lavender” Our popular lecture starts with a slide presentation of cultivating and displaying lavender, gives an historical background of lavender usage and moves on to display and discuss many wonderful lavender products.   A 45 minute program is followed by a question and answer period.

“Rosemary for Remembrance” This program is ideal for a club celebrating an anniversary or special occasion.  Rosemary lends itself to such a program being the herb of remembrance.  An historical overview of the plant usage will be covered as well as the use of rosemary in both medicinal and culinary pursuits.  Rosemary topiary will be demonstrated and handouts and recipes will be given.  This is approximately a 45 minute program followed by a question and answer period.
